The Berthold Technologies 9100 DG moving filter monitor permits to collect, measure and identify airborne radio-active particles in semi-real time mode. The system performs the tasks of a radioactivity early warning monitor and a fully automatic spectroscopy lab. analysis simultaneously. The early warning monitor function is realized with a prompt Alpha/Beta detector in evaluation intervals as short as 10 min. The spectroscopic assessment is performed with a HP Germanium detector and associated electronics. The spectrum analysis is performed on a PC, integrated in the equipment. Typically the acquired spectra are analysed in both 2h and 24h intervals (daily average) which results in detection limits of a few 10’s of milliBq/m³ for most of the isotopes relevant to Environmental monitoring. High sensitivity and great autonomy are key-features of this design. The high sensitivity is reached by using a high efficient Germanium detector combined with a high sample airflow rate of 25 m³/h. The autonomy of 6 Months is obtained by using S-class glass fibre filter-tape of 50 meter length advancing at a continuous speed of 10 mm/h. The Germanium detector is mechanically cooled eliminating the need for Liquid Nitrogen supply and filling apparatus. Long term drift is avoided thanks to the auto-gain stabilizer which operates on a build-in natural tracer source. The analysis software has been especially tailored for environmental monitoring applications to prevent false nuclide identification and reports the data in a user definable volumetric concentration table. Isotopes not found in the sample are indicated with their respective MDC values. Both spectra and analysis results are stored on the PC, and can be transferred to a Central Monitoring Computer via Ethernet or Modem connection.

Application: Alpha/Beta/Gamma particulates monitoring in low to medium intensity gamma fields. Applications where knowledge of the isotopic composition is key and autonomy – very long maintenance intervals are important. Environmental monitoring on critical sites, large population areas.
