ARSOlux – a portable kit to determine Arsenic in drinking water

Arsenic contaminated drinking water is a global problem particularly affecting countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Mongolia and Vietnam. ARSOlux is a biosensor test which is based on E. coli bacteria whose natural arsenic-detecting defence gene turns on an added luciferase gene in the presence of Arsenic. The luminescence intensity is proportional to the Arsenic present in the water sample.

For testing the water samples are injected into sealed vials containing freeze-dried bacteria. After 2 hours of incubation the vials are read in a portable luminometer.

With this quick, reliable and easy-to-use method the local population can make sure to consume safe non-contaminated water for their daily demand.
