It is easy to overlook the desalters when optimizing a refinery configuration. When processing opportunity crudes, is your two-stage desalting system suitable, are the transformers and grid arrangements adequate and is sufficient treating area available?

The level measurement in the bottom of any distillation column is a critical measurement task in refineries. Tower internals damage due to the failure of level control technologies for residual bottoms is one of the most common issues in refineries. However, this is not the only way that reliable bottoms level measurements can save costs and increase efficiency of the distillation process.

Offering multiple detectors and sources enables customized solutions that perfectly meet your requirements. Detectors and sources can be combined in various ways and may also be inserted in dip pipes. Regardless of the measuring configuration and component aging, all systems can compensate for fluctuating temperatures, which guarantees the highest level of accuracy. Berthold's custom solution depends on the measurement geometry, accuracy requirements, and electronic preferences.
With this function, weld tests can no longer distort the measured value. The measured value is frozen until the external radiation influence is over. A digital output signals the detection of interfering radiation. All our level measurements are equipped with XIP. Our detectors have the features external radiation detection (XIP) and suppression (RID), which are able to deal with interfering radiation and thus maintain stable reliable measurement and process control without additional hardware.
Gas property fluctuations in large vessels can greatly impact the output level value. Berthold compensates for such effects by using a second detector positioned at the top of the vessel which continuously monitors the gas phase. The gas property compensation (GPC) feature of Berthold’s systems uses the gas density signal to compensate the level signal for accurate and reliable process control. It reduces the risk of errors or failures, and helps customers
achieve better efficiency, safety and reliability.
The PBC trigger detector prompts the product buildup compensation feature to adjust the calibration curve to a new zero percent level for the continuous level detectors when the product level drops below the trigger detector’s height. The new zero point remains in effect until the vessel is emptied and the PBC is activated again. This ensures more accurate measurements, as PBC compensates for any buildup that may affect the continuous level detectors.
