One Health is an approach to design and implement programs, policies, legislation, and research in which multiple sectors communicate and work together to achieve better public health outcomes. It recognizes that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. In fact, 70 per cent of all emerging and re-emerging pathogens are zoonotic, jumping from animals to humans. One Health is gaining recognition as an effective way to fight health issues at the human-animal environment interface including zoonotic diseases.
This approach requires the cooperation of multiple stakeholders, collaboration and exchange of information are key aspects of the One Health approach. Professionals in human health, animal health, environmental, and other areas of expertise need to communicate, collaborate on, and coordinate activities.
